#ExpirationDatesFood waste manifests itself in many ways. Most are out of our reach and control. Expiration dates are one area everyone can understand and have personal impact. 37% of food waste comes from households. Here are some key points about food expiration dates:1. "Sell By" Date: This date is primarily for retailers. It indicates the date until which the store should sell the product while ensuring its quality.2. "Best By" or "Use By" Date: This date suggests the period during which the product will be at its peak quality, flavor, and freshness. Not necessarily a safety date.3. Safety and Health: Most foods remain safe to eat even after the "Best By" or "Use By" date has passed, as long as they have been stored properly. These dates are more about quality.4. Eggs: The date on an egg carton is typically a "Sell By" date, and eggs often remain safe to consume for a few weeks after that date.5. Canned goods: Canned foods can often last long past their expiration dates if the cans are undamaged.6. Meat and Dairy: Perishable items like meat and dairy products should be consumed or frozen before their expiration date to ensure safety.7. Freezing: If you can't use a product before its expiration date, consider freezing it to extend its shelf life.8. Trust your senses: In cases where the date is unclear or has passed, use your senses (smell, sight, and taste) to determine if a food item is still good to eat.9. Spoilage Signs: Lookout for signs of spoilage, like mold, bad smells, unusual textures, or package inflation. Discard these items or better yet #compost!10.Packaged and Processed Foods: Highly processed and packaged foods often have preservatives that can extend their shelf life beyond the date on the package.Remember that while expiration dates are a helpful guideline, they don't always indicate safety. Properly store your food and use your judgment. The video from TedEd gives a very good overview of these points.#AllAgConsidered - Click to Follow#foodwaste #foodsecurity #education #agriculture

How you store your food matters. Different food storage methods can make your groceries expire faster than they should or even spread around unfriendly bacteria. Do you have to refrigerate everything after opening it? Which produce shouldn't be stored next to tomatoes? There are so many rules to keep up with. https://lnkd.in/g8CbVRHy

What can look good, taste good, be clean to handle but is actually poisonous and causes severe health problems?Highly Processed Foods!Unless you eat raw food, most food we eat is processed to an extent. Just boiling an egg changes its molecular structure.Processing food includes washing, cleaning, cooking, frying, fermenting, and mixing with other foods like yeast and sugars to cause reactions. But it also includes, pressurizing, reheating, freezing, straining and adding all kinds of chemicals for taste, color, mouth feel, preservation and marketing purposes. This is where the "processed food kills you" adage comes in. Food that has been modified to such an extent that it no longer resembles the original food source is hard for your body to use as energy, and so the body ends up storing it. This storage of foreign molecules wreaks havoc on your health. It is like a pool or bathtub where its plumbing no longer functions properly, yet you continue dumping in more c**p.Now you know! That 30 cent bar of something that claims It's made from fruit might come back to haunt you.#eatforlife #strongvolution

Packaging plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of food products. Packaging helps to keep food contained and prevent it from coming into contact with other substances that could be harmful. This is especially important for perishable foods like fruits, vegetables, and meat, which can quickly spoil if they are not properly stored and protected.Packaging also helps to extend the shelf life of food products, which can be especially important in areas where there may be shortages of fresh foods.By keeping food products sealed and protected from light, moisture, and other contaminants, packaging can help to slow down the aging process and maintain the quality of the food.In addition to protecting food from contamination, packaging can also help to keep food safe from external factors like temperature changes. For example, some types of packaging are designed to keep food cool or warm, which can be important for preserving the freshness and quality of certain types of food.#PerfectPackaging #FoodQuality #FoodSafety
